Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has recently come under fire for its environmental practices in Memphis, Tennessee. The company has been accused of using natural gas burning turbines at its new data center without obtaining the necessary permits. This has raised concerns among environmental and health advocates in the area, who have pointed out that the turbines are contributing to the pollution problem in Memphis. The Southern Environmental Law Center has sent a letter to the Health Department in Shelby County and the Environmental Protection Agency, urging regulators to investigate xAI for its unpermitted use of the turbines and the pollution they emit.

While xAI has stated that it plans to eventually use power from the local utility, Memphis Light, Gas, and Water, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, the company is currently relying on the gas combustion turbines to power its facility. The utility has started providing 50 megawatts of power to xAI, but the facility requires an additional 100 megawatts. This has prompted MLGW to make improvements to transmission lines in the area in order to accommodate the added power consumption by xAI. The company’s extensive use of electricity for data training and processing has raised concerns about the environmental impact of its operations.

The advocates’ letter highlights the negative impact of the turbines on the surrounding community. The emissions from the turbines contain nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to the smog problem in the area. This has serious implications for public health, as exposure to nitrogen oxides can cause respiratory irritation, coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue, and nausea. Breathing in high levels of nitrogen oxides can lead to even more severe health issues. The advocates note that the turbines have the capacity to emit an estimated 130 tons of nitrogen oxides annually, making them one of the largest sources of pollutants in the county.

One of the major concerns raised by environmental advocates is the lack of transparency and public input regarding the xAI project. Amanda Garcia, a senior attorney with the Tennessee office of the Southern Environmental Law Center, emphasized the importance of public awareness and participation in projects with significant health and environmental impacts. Businesses in Tennessee are typically required to obtain permits for operating equipment like the turbines used by xAI, in order to monitor emissions and ensure compliance with air quality standards. The lack of permits and oversight in xAI’s operations has raised questions about the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

This is not the first time that Musk-led companies have faced scrutiny for environmental violations. SpaceX, The Boring Co., and Tesla have all been cited for operating high-emission equipment without proper permits or controls in place. SpaceX and The Boring Co. were fined for discharging wastewater without permits, while Tesla was cited for emitting hazardous air pollutants from its paint shop equipment. The recurrent theme of environmental violations across Musk’s ventures raises concerns about the overall environmental impact of his business practices and the need for stricter regulatory oversight.
