Brazil’s telecommunications regulator, Anatel, finds itself in the midst of a public confrontation with Elon Musk’s satellite internet firm Starlink. This conflict has intensified due to Brazil’s recent decision to block Musk’s social media company, X. The supreme court of Brazil issued a nationwide suspension of X last week after the company failed to appoint a legal representative within the court-mandated deadline, as required by the country’s laws. Anatel has now directed internet providers to block access to X in compliance with the court order.
Artur Coimbra, a commissioner at Anatel, disclosed that Starlink is the only company that has openly refused to comply with the court’s decision to block X. He further stated that Anatel is investigating the potential noncompliance of Starlink along with other network operators. Should Starlink continue to resist the court order, there are various sanctions that could be imposed on the company, including fines and the revocation of its license to operate in Brazil.
The feud between Elon Musk and Brazil dates back to April when a representative of X revealed that the company was forced to block certain accounts due to court decisions. Musk responded by announcing that the restrictions had been lifted and encouraged users to utilize a virtual private network (VPN) to bypass any potential social media bans. The conflict escalated even further when X decided to withdraw all its staff from Brazil, thereby failing to comply with the requirement of having an in-country employee to handle government takedown notices related to political misinformation.
The situation worsened as Starlink, Musk’s satellite internet company, became a target of the dispute between Musk and Brazil. The Brazilian supreme court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who was responsible for the ban on X, issued an order freezing Starlink’s finances and prohibiting the company from engaging in financial transactions within the country. X accused Moraes of intimidating their legal representative by freezing her bank accounts upon her resignation.
Elon Musk, not one to back down from a fight, has openly criticized Moraes, labeling him an “evil tyrant” and demanding his incarceration. He has condemned Brazil’s court ruling as an act of censorship and continues to clash with the regulatory authorities. As the conflict between Musk and Brazil entangles both Starlink and X, the future remains uncertain for both the billionaire entrepreneur and his ventures in the South American country.
