The recent release of Seekers of the Storm, the latest DLC for Risk of Rain 2, has caused quite a stir among fans of the co-op roguelite. Unfortunately, the initial reception has not been positive, with the DLC currently sitting at a 79% ‘mostly negative’ rating on Steam.

One of the main complaints from players is the multitude of bugs plaguing the DLC. These bugs have not only affected Seekers of the Storm but have also impacted the core systems of the base game. Some players have reported encountering issues such as bosses becoming invincible and being able to get stuck in certain places, like while “smelling the flowers”.

In response to the backlash, Gearbox, who acquired Risk of Rain from Hopoo Games in 2022, have acknowledged the issues and have released a list of known issues they are targeting. They have also encouraged players to continue submitting bug reports to help address the problems.

Co-creator Duncan Drummond expressed mixed feelings about the situation on Xitter, stating that while it is exciting to see new content for the game, it is disheartening to witness the growing pains of the new development team in real-time. He empathized with both the fans, who have lost functionality in a game they love, and the developers at Gearbox, who are likely under a significant amount of stress.

ROR2 lead programmer, co-designer, and concept artist Jeffrey Hunt shared his perspective on the situation, acknowledging the challenges faced by the team working on the DLC. He highlighted the dedication of the developers at Gearbox and their commitment to addressing issues and listening to feedback. Despite the difficulties, Hunt remains optimistic about the direction Gearbox is heading in.

Randolph P. Itchford, a representative from Gearbox, assured fans on Xitter that the team was actively working to correct, communicate, and compensate for the issues with Risk of Rain 2. While the player base has generally been satisfied with Gearbox’s custodianship of the game thus far, the recent backlash surrounding Seekers of the Storm has put a strain on their reputation.

The release of Seekers of the Storm has brought to light the challenges faced by the development team at Gearbox. While the DLC may have its shortcomings, it is evident that the developers are dedicated to addressing the issues and improving the overall experience for players. Only time will tell if Gearbox can successfully navigate these obstacles and regain the trust of the Risk of Rain 2 community.
