SpaceX is gearing up for its groundbreaking Polaris Dawn mission, which will see four astronauts heading into orbit on the Crew Dragon capsule. This mission, funded by billionaire Jared Isaacman, marks a significant moment in space exploration as it includes the first spacewalk by private astronauts.
The crew for the Polaris Dawn mission consists of a diverse group of individuals, including retired US Air Force fighter pilot Scott Poteet, SpaceX engineers Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis, and billionaire Jared Isaacman himself. Isaacman and Gillis are slated to undertake the spacewalk, a momentous occasion that will occur around 430 miles above Earth.
As the Crew Dragon capsule ascends into orbit, the astronauts will reach a maximum altitude of approximately 870 miles, marking one of the farthest distances traveled by astronauts since the Apollo missions. The mission will involve traversing through the Van Allen radiation belts, which NASA describes as bands of high-energy particles originating from the Sun and cosmic rays interacting with the Earth’s atmosphere.
The spacewalk during the Polaris Dawn mission serves as a pivotal aspect of the overall objectives. Isaacman and Gillis will test SpaceX’s advanced extravehicular activity (EVA) spacesuits, which feature new materials for enhanced mobility. These suits are equipped with a 3D-printed helmet that includes a heads-up display and a visor designed to reduce glare. In addition to the spacewalk, the Polaris Dawn mission will involve testing Starlink’s satellite internet technology for communication with Earth. The crew will also conduct research on decompression sickness and Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome, contributing to our understanding of the challenges faced by astronauts in space.
The Polaris Dawn mission is scheduled to launch on Tuesday, August 27th, with multiple launch times targeted by SpaceX. The Crew Dragon capsule will lift off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.
